Gwen Evans’s practice focuses on the conversation held between figure, object and pattern. Throughout her work she obscures the narrative of the characters portrayed, thereby subverting the symbolic worth of the objects within. Many of her pieces blur the boundaries between individual as a subject of the painting or object within, exemplified in ‘Ornament’. By obscuring the allegory depicted Evans creates an exchange, allowing the viewer to furnish the omitted narrative. Her painting hinges upon the juxtaposition between the traditional and contemporary; traditional in the sense of it’s composition but contemporary in it’s unorthodox depiction of object and individual resulting in the bizarre and surreal. There is also a contrast between the representational and flatly painted areas within her painting. This balance of aesthetics is mirrored through the objects precarious placement within her practice.
