I consider the philosophical ’empirical’ values inherent within both primary and secondary experience fundamental to my practice.
I am interested in how we acquire ideas from facts which we often cannot check and tend to take on trust. How we are vulnerable to propaganda means that elements of an incident or person can be compiled to make a complex whole, yet the grand edifice is built on shifting sands.
Propaganda as a means of disseminating information can be productive due to the successful establishment of cultural myths and stereotypes. These constructs become so deeply embedded into the cultural fabric of a society it is extremely difficult to recognise any alternative.
My ‘photo-fit’ paintings explore these customs of thought by referencing famous and infamous individuals from history and contemporary life. Who or what can we trust? What art can we trust? I want people to leave my work with questions.
I am a fine artist painter and printmaker. I gained my 1st Class Honours Degree in Fine Art at Bolton University after working in the construction industry, prior to this I served in the armed forces (14/20th Kings Hussars) as a tank crew member on Challenger tanks. Postings included: Catterick, Berlin, Munster and Operation Desert Storm 1990-91(1st Gulf War).
